Protecting the countryside through partnership

A unique collaboration between a countryside charity, a financial business, the media and The Game Fair has resulted in three iconic films on planting woodlands for the future, which tens of thousands of people have already seen.

The Queen’s Green Canopy, a huge tree-planting initiative surrounding Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, was the catalyst for the partnership, formed between the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity Woodland Trust, banking and wealth management group Investec and The Field, the hugely popular countryside and fieldsports publication.

The target of three 70-acre forests could equate to around 135,000 trees in total, a fantastic number and more than the footfall of visitors at The Game Fair itself, which was held at the end of July on the Ragley Hall estate in Warwickshire.

Planting of the three forests will take place from October and among those bidding to plant a wood for the Jubilee was The Field’s editor Alexandra Henton and her husband, who manages the family estate in Leicestershire.

All three bodies were brought together by The Game Fair, which saw three fascinating films created to highlight the importance of the project and look at the circumstance surrounding the bid.

These were shown at on the big screen in The Game Fair’s Main Arena to a potential audience of around 120,000 people.

James Gower, managing director of The Game Fair, said: “The synergy between ourselves and The Woodland Trust is clear. The creation of a legacy forest at an approved site demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and tackling climate change.”

This vital work to open new channels of communication between the Trust and the estates is only possible thanks to the collaborative approach taken by team behind The Game Fair. This collaboration will  work together, alongside other relevant countryside organisations, to promote real and rapid action to tackle the climate crisis. As a leading wealth and banking institution – and a key Game Fair sponsor – Investec was also a natural partner.

Woodland Trust senior relationships manager John Tucker said: “This exciting collaboration will help us to achieve our ambitious woodland creation plans. It is critical we create woodland at scale to combat the climate and nature crisis and deliver all the other benefits that trees can provide from timber to flood alleviation.”
