Bring your own dog to The Game Fair and compete in one of the have-a-go scurries.
Fun, fast-paced challenges designed to test your dog’s retrieving skills, obedience, and teamwork in a relaxed and friendly environment. Open to both adults and juniors, these informal gundog-style competitions are a great way for handlers of all experience levels to get involved and enjoy the action with their dogs.
Daily prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each event, with prize giving taking place every day at 5pm in the Working Dog Arena.
Sporting Saint, The Game Fair’s Official Gundog Equipment Supplier, will generously provide all prizes and competition equipment.
1) Scramble
This is designed to replicate obstacles a handler may find on a shoot day, dog and handler run around the course picking up dummies on the way, timed from crossing the start line to crossing the finish
2) Pickup
Dogs retrieve five dummies hidden behind brashings or bales. The clock starts each time the dog crosses the start line and stops when the dog crosses the line with the dummy. The fastest combined time for 5 dummies wins.
3) Bales
Two seen dummies are thrown at the end of a series of straw bales, the dog must jump the bales and retrieve the dummies back to the handler. The clock starts each time the dog crosses the start line and stops when the dog crosses the line with the dummy. The fastest combined time for two dummies wins.
4) Novice
A simple seen dummy is thrown and retrieve followed by a simple blind retrieve. The clocknstarts each time the dog crosses the start line and stops when the dog crosses the line with the dummy. The fastest combined time for two dummies wins.
5) Open
Two seen dummies are thrown and retrieved followed by two blind retrieves. The clock starts each time the dog crosses the start line and stops when the dog crosses the line with the dummy. Fastest combined time for two dummies wins.
Note: All scurries are open to recognised gundog breeds and crosses. Anyone with a non-gundog breed can enter, but their time will not count in the competition. The Novice scurry is only open to dogs that have not been placed at a scurry before.
BASC Scurry Have-A-Go Events
BASC is running four very popular scurries. Daily prizes are awarded for 1st , 2nd and 3rd place in each event. Prize giving is at 4.15pm each day.
Friday – Sunday 10am – 4pm (£3 per go)
Scramble/Over the Bales
One seen dummy is thrown at the end of a series of bales. The dog that jumps the bales to retrieve the dummy in the fastest time, wins. There is also a special award for the fastest non-gundog.
Long Retrieve
Dogs must retrieve a seen dummy from a long distance away. The fastest dog wins. There is also a special award for the fastest young handler dog duo (handlers aged 16 or younger).
Partridge Pen
Dogs must retrieve a seen dummy thrown into a small bale lined pen. As the dog returns with the first dummy, a second is placed in the pen unseen. The winner is the dog that retrieves both dummies in the fastest time.
Pick & Mix
Dogs must retrieve specified dummies from a number of possible options hidden among brash.
Scurry Cup Competition
£10 entry. Dogs that wish to compete for the ultimate prize may enter the scurry cup, where a combined time total of three events (Long Retrieve, Partridge Pen and Pick & Mix) separates the best of the best. Dogs are given one warm-up run and then they will have their timed run. T&Cs apply.
