The story behind the 5 Regions Charity Working Test is a sad one, as it arises from the loss of dear friends and colleagues, and from witnessing people suffer in silence, carrying the burden of mental anguish in isolation.

Mental health struggles often remain hidden, especially within close-knit sporting communities where resilience and strength are expected. The 5 Regions Charity Working Test was created to change that — shining a light on loneliness, anxiety, depression, and emotional hardship while bringing people together through a shared passion for the sport.

The Inspiration Behind the Event

The charity initiative was born from a place of loss and reflection. Organisers had witnessed friends and colleagues quietly carrying the burden of mental health challenges without support.

The turning point came with the passing of Alan Hopkins Young — a respected A-panel judge, dedicated competitor, and a kind, generous figure within the sport. Like many others, Alan struggled privately. His passing inspired the community to take action and create an event that would both honour his memory and encourage open conversations about mental wellbeing.

From One Idea to a Nationwide Movement

What began as a single charity Working Test quickly grew into a national initiative. The event was held across 5 regions of the UK over the weekend of 17–18 May, allowing participants from all areas to get involved and show their support.

Each region brought together handlers and dogs, celebrating teamwork, skill, and community spirit — all while promoting an important message: no one should struggle alone.

The Road to the Final at The Game Fair

The top three competitors from each region qualified for the grand final at The Game Fair.

As one of the largest and most prestigious off-season events in the sporting calendar, The Game Fair provided the perfect stage. Bringing together finalists from across the country helped maximise awareness and ensured the campaign’s message reached a wider audience.

You will find the Event in the Hertford Arena at The Game Fair

Why The 5 Regions Charity Working Test Matters

The 5 Regions Charity Working Test is more than a competition. It represents:

  • Community support and connection
  • Honouring those we have lost
  • Breaking the stigma around mental health
  • Encouraging open conversations
  • Promoting the message: Mental Health Matters

By uniting competitors from across the UK, the Five Regions Charity Working Test has become a powerful platform for change. Its continued growth ensures that the conversation around mental health remains visible, supportive, and ongoing.

Because behind every competitor, handler, and volunteer is a person — and no one should face mental health struggles in silence.
