UK and Qatar strengthen ties through Falconry partnership

Falconry is more than just a popular pastime in Qatar – it’s a national treasure with a celebrated history and a very bright future.

It is no wonder then that through Doha’s cultural village Katara, under the patronage of His Highness The Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, a wonderful partnership exits to celebrate falconry. Two spectacular events, The Game Fair in the United Kingdom, a celebration of the countryside since 1958 attracting 120,000 visitors each year, and S’Hail – Katara International Hunting and Falcons Exhibition, Qatar’s annual showcase promoting the pursuit and preservation of hunting with falcons as well it’s rich Arabian heritage.

The Game Fair has always shone a strong light on the art of falconry and the 2021 event, taking place from 23-25 July at Ragley Hall, is no exception. Visitors will be able enjoy world-class falconry displays, learn from the experts, get-up close to a selection of magnificent birds and shop for accessories from the Souq-style exhibitors.  Visitors will also be able to sample traditional Qatari delicacies and research options to travel to this culturally rich region.

Tourists may well choose to travel to Qatar in October to ensure their visit coincides with the S’Hail event (20-24 October).  S’Hail – is also known as Canopus, the only star that is closely related to hunting. It is a sign of a new beginning and when nature signals the start of hunting season.

The intrinsic link between hunting and food is something that is key for both events. Qatar is a country that walks a fine line between modernity and tradition. Presenting a rich and diverse culinary scene with a plethora of choices, from Michelin-starred restaurants and experimental cuisine to delicious street food. At The Game Fair, food also plays a key role. Acclaimed chef James Martin is once again heading up the Enclosure Restaurant, and there will be an even greater focus on fresh game in 2021. The new Totally Game Area will feature talks and outdoor cookery demonstrations with tasters galore for visitors to learn about and experience the versatility of Game meat.

James Gower, managing Director of The Game Fair said, “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with S’hail to share with visitors the centuries old tradition of falconry as well as  bringing a taste of Qatar’s rich Middle Eastern culture to Warwickshire this July.”

“We both share a common goal to preserve and celebrate our gaming heritage and we are very much looking forward to developing our plans together over the coming months.”

Mr. Abdulaziz, representing S’hail higher organising committee added “In 2020, Qatar welcomed participants from over 13 different countries even in these adverse circumstances. The total turnout of exhibitors, visitors and the business generated this year was commendable and itself proved the fact that S’hail is shining brighter with every passing year and making its strong presence across the entire spectrum of Hunting & Falconry globally”.
