BASC unveils new Head of Firearms

Forensic scientist Martin Parker has been appointed as the new head of firearms at the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC).

Martin, whose most recent post was as chief scientist at the National Ballistics Intelligence Service is a biochemist by training and has been involved in forensic science as a practitioner, instructor and senior manager. Part of his career has been devoted to forensic firearms examination at every level.

BASC’s director of firearms, Bill Harriman, said Martin was well-known and respected within law enforcement and government agencies and highly regarded by those shooting organisations he has come into contact with on working groups and committees.
He explained Martin’s appointment would help to ensure that “BASC members continue to receive the unparalleled level of service in firearms matters that has defined our outstanding reputation in this field.”

Martin said: “I believe that both the police service and legitimate shooters have the same goal; namely for the sport to continue with the minimum of bureaucracy, whilst preventing firearms falling into the wrong hands. It is my job to harmonise BASC’s and the police services’ approaches, to our members’ undoubted benefit.”

Bill Harriman added: “I have known Martin for many years and hold him in the highest esteem. BASC is fortunate to secure his services. As well being an experienced firearms forensic examiner, he has an unrivalled knowledge of firearms law and extensive contacts within the police service.

“His appointment is testament to the fact that BASC takes the continuity of its unique firearms team seriously by securing its future personnel. I look forward to working with him.”

BASC boasts the UK’s only full-time firearms team, offering expert help and advice to members on all aspects of firearms law.
