With rural crime seemingly on the increase, Perthshire company Farmstream was set up just 18 months ago to offer affordable and effective CCTV and livestock monitoring systems to farms and other businesses in remote locations.

When Eddie McDiarmid first investigated installing CCTV on the family farm, the cost of outsourcing an electrician for install was simply not feasible to him or many in the farming community.

With rising rural crime rates, a hole in the market for self-install affordable CCTV systems was recognised and Farmstream was born.

Eddie and fellow engineering student Callum Hay began the business in March 2020 and they are now bringing the opportunity to rural firms and landowners visiting the GWCT Scottish Game Fair, headline sponsored by NFU Mutual, at Scone Palace from September 24th to 26th.

Managing director Eddie grew up on his working family farm in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, and has been involved in the farming community his whole life. He has several years of working with CCTV systems and him and co-founder Callum Hay both have two years of consumer selling experience – which has resulted in over 5,000 satisfied Farmstream customers to date.

Eddie explained: “As the cameras can connect to a mobile phone via a free viewing app, check-ins can be done anytime and anywhere. With 4G and WiFi options, WiFi is not a necessity for the cameras to connect – and we can supply 4G antennae where coverage is poor – and they can also run off a 12V power supply or solar kit set up, instead of needing mains power, for off-grid options.

“This is particularly useful if the cameras are placed in a shed during lambing time and then moved outdoors for security at other times of the year.

“Our best seller and most popular product is our 4G 360 Degree Camera. It is IP66 rated, has an 80m infrared range, is a PTZ camera and runs via a SIM card to connect to 4G.

“The camera can be plugged into mains or run off a 12V battery and our solar kit is specifically designed to power this camera 24/7 all year round, making it ideal for locations without power.

“It is a favourite for customers looking to place a camera in their lambing/calving shed during the season and then move to a different location for security purposes for the rest of the year. As multiple people can log into the same camera via an app, close friends and family members can also help keep an eye on what’s going on.”

All Farmstream cameras come with a one-year warranty and technical support to all customers throughout and beyond the warranty period.

The company aims to have a member of its specialist technical team respond to all technical queries within 24 working hours via email or via phone – depending on what suits the customer best.
