2024-07-10T09:33:17+00:00

Outdoorsy, reasonably athletic, a fresh healthy complexion, patient, energetic, dog-loving and well-dressed when the occasion merits - fieldsports fans have a lot to recommend them, particularly if you're looking for a partner. So with Valentine's Day fast approaching, we asked a few country sorts why they would recommend dating a fieldsports type. Here's what they said: Foodies Will Pocklington, of Schöffel Country and Le Chameau advised: “Country types are well placed to source a range of wild foods – from venison and pigeon to wild garlic and puffballs.” Louisa Clutterbuck, CEO of Eat Wild says: “Date a good Shot and you’ll ...

How being outside and carving wood helped this Game Fair exhibitor deal with PTSD

2024-07-10T09:36:02+00:00

"Being outside in nature 100% helps our mental health." Such is the view of Rob Dalton of Daltonwood, an artist whom you can watch at work at The Game Fair. He works in wood using chainsaws to create sculptures. An artist? Ten years ago however, nobody would have been more surprised than Rob to be described as an artist, let alone exhibiting at The Game Fair. As he says: "My sister commented, 'Rob, where has this come from? You've never had an artistic bone in your body.'" https://youtu.be/i3cucFcr4_g?si=IOYJG7v-iZ7NJaoj Ten years ago Rob was crippled by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). ...

Glass blowing – watch craftspeople in action at The Game Fair

2024-07-10T09:34:38+00:00

Glass blowing is an ancient craft that has been around since the days of the Old Testament. Blown glass can create many things - a beautiful ornament, a stunning light fitting or a practical dish or glass. So what is glass blowing? Basically it is the skill of creating shapes and objects in molten glass by blowing air into it. Master craftspeople can create everything from a wine glass to a statue. Furnaces in a workshop heat the glass to make it pliable and then a blowpipe shapes and introduces air into the glass. The blowpipe is rolled on a special ...

Spring is on its way and it's the time when many people think about taking on a new working dog puppy. How you can do your bit this January and encourage people to ‘Eat Wild’

2024-01-03T15:52:04+00:00

Do you know about Veganuary? It's an annual challenge to encourage people to follow a vegan lifestyle during the month of January. Which is curious, as recent research shows that Britain is turning its back on veganism, with the health concious younger generation buying more game and venison, thanks to celebrity chefs publicising its health benefits. To counter Veganuary, Eat Wild, the development board for all wild meat, has launched "Join in this January". If you go shooting - whether as a Gun, a picker-up or a beater, you can take part and help to educate local communities about the benefits ...

With game and venison being the nutritionally excellent options they are, they definitely fit the bill. And now this wild meat is being offered at nurseries in Dorset and Hampshire. The move has come about thanks to the work of Eat Wild, the development board for all wild meat in the UK and delicious wild meat meals are being served to children at Tops Nurseries, three times a week.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by ...

Where have all the hedgehogs gone?

2024-01-23T17:17:18+00:00

"As a boy we had hedgehogs everywhere, ground nesting birds ..." So what has happened? Why are hedgehogs in decline and some of the birds we used to hear so much? To get the answer, you have to listen to somebody who works on the land. Gareth Wyn Jones works on the family hill farm in Wales, where the land has been cultivated for the past 375 years. The farm currently has 4000 head of ewe and 300 head of cattle. He says: "We're all under threat, our way of life is under threat and we need to fight back.... Nobody ...

The first-ever Game Fair in 1958. What’s changed? What’s stayed the same?

2024-07-10T09:35:04+00:00

In 1958 Harold Macmillan was Prime Minister, the first Paddington Bear book was published, the parking meter was launched and the first-ever Game Fair was held at Stetchworth Park, Newmarket. If you'd been a member of the CLA (Country Landowners' Association), entry to the Game Fair would have been free, otherwise adults would have paid 2/6,  children under 14,  1/3. You'd have paid 5/- to park your car if you had one, but in any case the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company was running special buses from Newmarket. Useful facilities included a mobile post office with a public coin box. Trade stands ...

We asked a group of people why they come to The Game Fair and what they particularly like about it. Here's what they said. Anything sound familiar? "Catching up with friends" We talked to somebody who's being coming to the Game Fair for over 20 years and he said it was the perfect place to meet up with friends he'd been at agricultural college with.
